A new bakery?
Say less.
We were intrigued when we saw, on Instagram, a pumpkin headed man sitting outside an adorable bakery drinking coffee. We were more intrigued when we saw the photos with gorgeous art on the walls, a green and white striped awning, and beautiful looking bread and pastries.
The photo that intrigued us. @thebakernnj on Instagram.
We decided to visit The Baker in Madison yesterday to give it a taste test.
Behind the counter stood the baker, Patrick Sullivan, dressed as Hook for a pre-Halloween celebration, serving up pastries, pouring coffee, and being quite the entertainer.
We tried the drip coffee (it was perfect), the coffee cake, the cinnamon bun croissant (yup, you read that right), and the pretzel. It was all so excellent that we took more home for later.
The base of most of the baked goods is organic sourdough, including a variety of sour dough breads, croissants, scones and more. The cinnamon bun croissant was the brainchild of the baker’s wife, and is a light and airy version of a cinnamon bun. original. It’s incredible.
The famed cinnamon bun croissant.
The Baker just opened in April, and hit the ground running. Sullivan’s wife was pregnant with their fourth child and was working behind the counter, wanting to be there to meet the community.

All the art is vintage (no reproductions), there are marble countertops, gorgeous chandeliers and sconces, leather banquettes and romantic cafe chairs.
It’s really just so beautiful and everything is so tasty. It’s on Waverly, a beautiful street in historic Madison. Go see for yourself.
